I'm fairly certain Barry's right, and I work for Men & Mice.  ;-)

Seriously, I think the misconception is that every subdomain needs
to be a subzone, and as a subzone has an SOA RR and NS RRs.
That's not the case, though:  You can implicitly create a bar
subdomain by putting a record like

foo.bar    IN    A    10.0.0.1

into your zone data file.  If you do, bar has no RRs associated with
it at all, so it can own a CNAME RR.

So, that said, we'll clarify the glossary.
