This sounds like it's doing play-and-play on the NIC card.  On my W2K Laptop
with a PCMCIA Ethernet card, I don't need to do more than keep it in the
system for it to see the device and the addresses. It may be the on XP, the
driver requires a connection for the system to recognize it.
