ndc querylog might be a starter. It might not work when the
system has choked.

But since you seem to be running a smp system, bind-9.2.1 might be a
better solution ( if your problems comes from piling up lots of
queries and something is dropping the answers. Bind-9 will happily use 
all your cpu's.

While i'm in, do think about running nameservices on a dedicated 
machine, not a mail/nfs/samba server.
