Following up to myself - this appears to be solved.  Apparently there 
was a NAT issue between our nameservers and some bits of MCD.  I'm still 
a bit puzzled *why* the above behaviour was occuring, but I'll take the
"it's fixed" state and worry about the root cause when I have more time.
