Weird characters appended after filename

If you see those files for more than a fraction of a second or so, and 
they remain empty, and are never relaced by the file without the 
"weird" extension, then that's a symptom...

A symptom of your slave server's inability get a zone transfer.

Every time your slave tries to get a zone transfer it creates the file 
with a "weird" extension; that's a temporary file, and it's got the 
extension specifically to keep it from overwriting the "good" file.

Check your logs on the slave server, and on the master server if you 
have access to it, to find out why you can't get the zone file.
