searching dns entries (locally) - any thoughts?

The short answer that is no. For a variety of reasons -- spammers,
privacy, domain name speculators, data protection, copyright, legal
constraints, operational issues, etc. -- most TLD registries do not
allow their zones to be transferred by random members of the public.
Some make the zone data available to bona fide analysts who are
carrying out genuine research. [Verisign -- .com and .net -- do. Or
did.] You will need to approach each registry and ask them for their
zone data. Be prepared to explain in detail why you want access to
the zone files and what you're going to do with it.
