Unable to resolve reillycompany.com except with +trace

Hello --

I have an internal DNS server (bind 9.3.0) that is unable to resolve
reillycompany.com:

If I perform the dig with '+trace' however, I get a response:

I'm trying to understand why the query would work in one case and not
the other.  And, does this indicate that I have a misconfiguration
somewhere?

If more detail is req'd (logs, configs, etc.) I am happy to provide.
