BIND 4.9.6 and later accept many-answer responses.

	From BIND 4 CHANGES.

779. [bug] named-xfer can now handle RFC1035-compliant zone transfers.

BIND 4 only ever generated one-answer AXFR streams.

BIND 8 has always accepted many-answer and by default produces
	one-answer AXFR streams.

BIND 9 has always accepted many-answer and by default produces
	many-answers AXFR streams.

Certain older versions of Microsoft's nameserver use a 16k
buffer (rather than a 64 buffer) and as a result can't
accept a many-answer AXFR stream that uses full sized
transmit buffers. To interoperate with these versions you
transmit one-answer stream which work for all but the most
	exceptional zones.
