I have been unable to switch from 9.2.x to 9.3.x since the beta days
because named kept dying on me with exactly that symptom. While the
daemon is initializing, I see two named processes running. When I would
expect the daemon to continue as a single background process doing its
normal job, it instead crashes logging an INSIST error. The problem
isn't 100 percent reproducible, but I have seen the daemon come up
properly just once or twice, while I have seen it crash dozens of times.
I already sent the attached problem report to this list back in January.
Unfortunately, I didn't get a response then. Maybe someone can at least
explain what rbt.c is all about, so one might get an idea about what
might be going wrong.

Subject: BIND 9.3.1beta2 crashing during startup
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed

Trying to replace a BIND 9.2.2 which has been working happily for more
than a year with BIND 9.3.1beta2, named is crashing during startup,
logging an error message:
> named[52958]: rbt.c:1579: INSIST(child != ((void *)0)) failed
Once, I also saw a crash at a different line in the same source file:
> named[52746]: rbt.c:1612: INSIST(child != ((void *)0)) failed
This happens on both AIX 4.3.3 and AIX 5.1. To avoid the crash, I have
to strip down my named.conf to basically caching-only.
What is this rbt.c stuff about, and why would named crash in it?
