Sounds like a problem with your smtp servers rather than dns. Setting up 
the A record for the domain should have no effect for the email delivery 
in properly configured system.

What mechanism those smtp servers use to deliever the message to the 
clients email server, and have you checked the logs at the smtp servers, 
probably find the problem right there.
