My approach would be to use a dynamic host service like dyndns.com.

I setup a remote1.homedns.org with a cname in my zone:

remote.abc.com 3600 in cname remote1.homedns.org

And use a dynamic dns client on the laptop.  Then you don't even care 
what OS is on the laptop, just use the proper client for the OS on it.
