But the reason I didn't just let this die is because the behaviour not
only contradicts the documentation=2C but also the behaviour of another
system=2E A sparc running solaris works flawlessly without the help of a
resolv=2Econf=2C just as stated in the documentation=2E Which is why I wond=
er
if the resolver is broken in Linux=2E

Probably not=2C but this might well break W2K's Active Directory Service
which is fairly important to those boxes=2E Giving anything unrestrained
write access to the DNS gives me the heebie-jeebies=2E So you might want
to consider delegating a domain for those W2K boxes to scribble away
to their heart's content=2C well away from your important resource
records for your web=2C mail=2C name=2C etc servers=2E

IIUC W2K uses dynamic updates to make the DNS more WINS-like=3A =22Hey=2C
I'm a Domain Controller=2FRAS Server=2Fetc=2C etc=22=2E If these updates ar=
e
rejected=2C your W2K boxes might have trouble finding each other=2E
