I'll argue that the basics have not changed.

Get a good foundation of the basics and then add new deltas / 
refinements on top of that.

I see no reason not to start with DNS & BIND or Jan-Piet Mens' book.

I've never looked at Pro DNS and BIND [1], but I frequently see it show 
up when I'm researching things.  Usually from zytrax's site [2].
