Non-terminal wildcards?

Anyone have any reaction to that message I sent a few weeks ago about
non-terminal wildcards working in BIND 8?  That is, putting

mail.*.doubletree.com.    IN    <something>
*.doubletree.com.    IN    <something else>

actually works (you get <something> back when looking up
mail.mumble.doubletree.com, and <something else> back when looking up
mumble.doubletree.com).

Intentional?  Unintentional?
