Ok, having seen other peoples replies - I can see that's almost certainly 
the problem.

Ironically I can see this was buried in the config, and set a 'long time 
ago' to avoid problems with another sites zone transfers (here's hoping 
that's a non-issue now).

If this is "not allowed" any more, and does not work (and realising I'm the 
one saying this as I got bitten by the problem) - can Bind not raise some 
dire warning / error if you try to do this?

I'm sure there's plenty of other 'not allowed' configs that do raise errors 
/ warnings / prevent startup - and I realise this was 'user error' per-se - 
but it's a particularly nasty user error to fall foul of.
