i could so have added the exact same text to my message :) (as jeremy also noted)

although i wouldn't mind something for xml that's as lightweight as possible (i
have the feeling it could be slimmer than libxml2, although if we use it in a
lot of places, in the end that doesn't really matter)

btw afaik python has native xml support, but not for xpath. But the xml module
that implements that is pretty widely used.
