It should not be possible to corrupt data by abruptly killing or  
crashing the server. (see http://www.usenix.org/events/hotos03/tech/candea.html

I note that Apache's normal shutdown (invoked by '/etc/rc.d/rc.apache  
stop') is abrupt, because that's what you want when init is shutting  
down the computer. There's also 'rc.apache graceful' for use when  
quiescing a server while completing existing connections (eg so other  
servers behind a load balancer can take over).
