=> yes, some of the trac826 patches are not very clean: the goal
is to have the code to work. But when a problem is not WIN32 specific
and so should be addressed anyway I brought it to your attention,
insisting about the problem itself.
(PS: don't come to smallish fixes, I tend already to abuse of the
smallest fix :-)

=> I try from time to time to make trac826 closer to master. This
fixes/improvements message was an attempt to get master closer to
trac826, keeping in a future trac826 only the WIN32 specific stuff.
BTW one day (next year?) it should be fine to merge trac826 into
master too.
