FWIW, I currently start BIND 10 from /etc/rc.local (probably a
Debian-ism) with:
screen -d -m /opt/bind10/sbin/bind10

I always thought the whole idea of daemonizing was a bit dated, since
there are so many better ways of doing this; like the ones you mentioned
(FreeBSD's daemon(8) or Ubuntu's Upstart), or pretty much anything
else...
