Some. I suspect the idea was to handle transition from one configuration to
another in smoother way. Just keep the old version until every reader switches
to the new configuration.
However, the design didn't have any notification that reader switched from one
version to another AFAIK. Therefore the manager just had to accumulate the
configuration snapshots and do updates on all of them at once. What was supposed
to happen when both new and old version used the same data source, therefore the
same image file, that I don't know (that is another reason why I'd like to get
rid of them, not only the infinite growth of memory consumption, more complexity
and more updates being performed).
