I also assumed multiple segments, although I am now wondering if we
will quickly run into system limits, such as a maximum of 100 shared
memory regions per system or something like that (google SHMMNI for
some examples).

So I guess to avoid such problems we should begin with a single
segment, or at least the notion of keeping a small number of segments.
