 Agreed, but again, I'd prefer to merge what's been done and address this
 comment in #259.

 Meanwhile, may I request a sanity check on the rebasing I've done?  This
 ticket was started prior to the boost::asio->asio change, the creation of
 asio_link.cc, and msgq using a unix domain socket, and the changes are
 extensive enough to make me concerned I might have missed something in the
 merge.  I've attached a diff against the current trunk.
