 the branch failed make check on OSX. This wasn't caused by the changes
 here, but apparently already present in the master branch when this branch
 got branched. It seems to have been fixed in master, so I've merged master
 into it (commit 19912ea4537e669f9c9ad1108b6f5453025738ef), so tests should
 not fail anymore now.
