 oooone more thing, said Columbo.

 When i meant whitespace in the doxygen comments, i actually meant in the
 .h files themselves (for those masochists of us who prefer reading .h over
 .html), not literal \n's :)

 All other changes are ack, and you are right about the redundant
 call/returns, so please go ahead and merge.
