 Thanks, merged.

 I'm aware it doesn't achieve the full goal of the ticket, only part of the
 path there and I'm keeping the ticket open. I just wanted to have the
 changes merged ASAP instead of waiting for the branch to diverge too much.
 I'll have a look at more of the problems there soon.
