 Note: while the ticket description mentions allocate/deallocate,
 they may not be needed for the purpose of this task.  On the other
 hand, I found we needed it for #2091, so I started #2091 with that
 part and pushed the change.  If you want to incorporate it to this
 ticket please refer to the current snapshot of trac2091.
