 No, they are not needed. So I'm leaving it up to #2091. The pointers are
 replaced by the offset_ptr.

 The only thing I did not replace is the NULLNODE. AFAIK there was a ticket
 to stop using it and use proper NULLs instead, so it would be wasted work.
