 Sorry, I didn't intend to steal the review process, but I've
 independently noticed several things as I worked on #2371 (which can
 also affect #2371), and couldn't help mentioning it here.  I'll at
 least try to not raise minor things like style issues (and feel free
 to ignore any such things I've mentioned).

 As far as I can see nothing I've raised would affect the
 implementation of #2371 any more and can be just ignored (at least in
 the scope of this ticket).
