Paul: Even if you build botan from source, which you would have to do anyway to use botan 1.10.1, there is still a dependency of bind10 configure on pkg-config. You can build that from source as well, I believe, from http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/pkg-config. At some point I suppose there is a tradeoff between building all the dependencies of the dependencies from source and reasonable time and effort to achieve the final result.
Jinmei: botan, as packaged by Debian and Ubuntu, had dependencies on libbz2-dev, libgmp3-dev, libssl-dev, zlib1g-dev, and hardening-wrapper. It also has a dependency on python, although that is installed by default on Ubuntu. Some or all of these dependencies may go away if botan is configured without the parameters ' --with-bzip2 --with-gnump --with-openssl --with-zlib'. Are these parameters to botan configure required for botan to function with bind10? The bind10 guide doesn't discuss this issue, other than to state that installing Botan 1.8 or greater is a prerequisite to bind10.
