i won't have time to evaluate this until we start putting 3.1.0 together
(unless i'm off my rocker and this is a bugfix rather than a feature
enhancement, please do set me straight).

i think there might need to be a few changes with the global variable
you used, but other than that i want to see this incorporated.

thank you for all your effort on this, i happen to have an HP-UX
11.11i machine here so i think we can keep this alive.
