Shorter mclt times?

Hello Nicholas,

Shorter MCLT means your server has to wait for the shorter duration in
case of failure and before allocating your partner's IP address. But the
drawback with shorter MCLT is as initial offered lease will be
equivalent to MCLT for new clients and renew will be half the time as
you know and incase the rate of clients entry is high the server will be
loaded heavily with the renewal. Which will be applicable if the server
stays longer than desired lease time (default lease time) in
Communication interrupted state as it will extend only the lease value
for MCLT time.

It's obviously the administrator choice and calculate the above
restrictions such as.

1. Client Entry rate
2. Expected Down Time

As there is no true recommendation for this value to keep it either
short or long, both has their advantages as well as disadvantages

Regards
Mani

Subject: Shorter mclt times?

I was wondering what the drawback is of having short mclt times. 1800
seems like an eternity on a large DHCP organization with short lease
times. I am thinking a value of 300 makes a lot more sense. Any info
would be greatly appreciated.
