One more piece of things:

I finally found this in the BIND logs.
Not at all clear what it means, but it's the only relevent item I can find.

24-Jul-2013 13:57:22.906 client 10.8.20.5#47786: signer "rndc-key" approved
24-Jul-2013 13:57:22.906 client 10.8.20.5#47786: update 'somedom.local/IN'
approved
24-Jul-2013 13:57:23.931 client 10.8.20.5#39189: update
'0.1.10.in-addr.arpa/IN' denied

So, for some unknown reason, BIND appears to have denied the update.
Any pointers as to why?
