I'm not entirely sure, since I don't know how your newsreader works, but
an error saying that GROUP is not implemented indicates that you're
talking to innd rather than nnrpd.  This usually means that the news
reader has not sent the MODE READER command that's required after opening
a new connection if the host from which you're connecting is allowed to
either feed news or read news.
