Speeding up expireover

I'm noticing that expireover is taking 8 hours to run here
for approximate 1.8M articles. Most of the articles are in
timehash, with small portion in cnfs and tradspool. Any
thoughts on what could be done to speed up the process?
Multithread? A more permissive approach where expireover
would just use the history file to determine whether
an article is still around rather that opening the files
and then have a monthly job that would actually go out and
check the filesystem?
Any thoughts?
