A Perl interface to the storage library would probably be the best case
for you, the more I think about it.  Since you have to initialize the
storage library to get token to path mappings for tradspool anyway, you
probably don't want to fork off sm for every article even if all it's
doing is the token translation.

I've been thinking for a while about shipping INN with some Perl modules
as a standard part of the distrubtion (but possibly not installed by
default).

Although I see that Katsuhiro just had an even better idea which works so
long as you're using traditional spool.
