remembertrash tells INN to remember any bad article, not just ones posted
to unwanted groups. I agree with you that syntax errors should probably
be treated the same as posts to unauthorized groups (a rejection, but
nothing added to the history file) because there's a good chance that the
remote server has mangled the article and invalid articles are rare so the
overhead of rejecting each one a few more times isn't too bad.
But it may be worth some additional discussion.
The problem arises from the fact that right now, INN makes a few decisions
based on the assumption that any article with the same message ID will be
an identical copy of any other article with that message ID.
