Authenticating readers with INN 2.2.2

After trying for over two weeks to get my news server running... I have
finally given up. I tried inn 2.3 as well but that gave me stranger
problems. All I want is a standalone news server to serve local newsgroups.
Anyone can access the groups from anywhere but should get Read access only.
If the user authenticates himself, nnrpd should check his auth with system
(shadowed) passwd file and grant Read+Post access.

Putting the '+' in the third field of my nnrp.access in the format

*:Read Post:+::*,!control*,!junk*

didn't work. I guess that's got to do with shadowed file. So I made
/etc/shadow root:shadow = -r--r-----. Yet it didn't work.

So I made nntpperlauth =true. But now I need an appropriate nnrpd_auth.pl.
Also where do I put that file and what perms should it have?

Has anyone already written an nnrpd_auth.pl for my purpose?

Rushi
