I rather like this. My original design for the authorization mechanism
was that certain operations (anything from connecting to attempting to
select a specific group) could trigger an authorization demand from the
server. That was in the NNTP authorization supplement, later in the
son-of-RFC977 that never saw the light of day. I think the reference
implementation actually used this at one point, although it's long
enough ago (10 years!) that I don't remember.
The method indicated above is probably a lot simpler to implement and
would have a better human interface as well.
