CNFS troubles

I'm trying to get CNFS running under Digital UNIX - everything compiles fine
but I consistently get these messages in the log:

Sep 26 11:23:48 home expire[10991]: CNFS-sm: Mismatch: read 0x73f78000
length for cycbuff /var/spool/news/cycbuff/rrz3h
Sep 26 11:23:48 home expire[10991]: SM storage method 'cnfs' failed
initialization

here's the storage.conf:

method cnfs {
        newsgroups: *
        class: 1
#       size: 0,1900
#       expires: 4d1s
        options: SPOOL
}

here's the cycbuffer.conf:

cycbuff:ONE:/var/spool/news/cycbuff/rrz3h:1945600
metacycbuff:SPOOL:ONE

any ideas would be most appreciated.
