help! something's horribly wrong

I've upgraded my machine to newer hardware, with a fresh load of
HP/UX 11.00, and found that there's something really wrong with
history. I started with an empty history file, then ran
'makedbz -i -f history'. Good so far...
I start up innd, and when it starts pulling in articles, any
attempt to look up the message IDs (from the news log) with
grephistory usually fail either with not found or /dev/null
(if it does return a token, it's the wrong token).
Also, innd must not be able to properly query history, because
if I stop the show, and run makedbz again, makedbz says there
are lots of duplicates.
Speaking of the history files, here's what they look like after
a minute or so of innd running:
-rw-r--r-- 1 news news 316465 Dec 7 12:05 history
-rw-r--r-- 1 news news 44 Dec 7 12:05 history.dir
-rw-r--r-- 1 news news 4500000 Dec 7 12:05 history.hash
-rw-r--r-- 1 news news 2063798544 Dec 7 12:05 history.index
That history.index is definitely focked.
I've tried both 2.3.2 and a recent CURRENT, with the same results.
Any ideas???
I configured as follows:
./configure --prefix=/inn --with-spool-dir=/news --with-perl --with-news-master=news --with-syslog-facility=LOG_LOCAL0 --enable-largefiles --with-berkeleydb
-heath
