Linux largefile problems

What was an annoyance has become a real problem! I'm runnin
20010222-CURRENT on a Linux 2.4.3pat kernel, and somewhere the article
sizes are getting determined to be negative. I noted before in the logs:
[snip] mid> 1226 albany02f rdrbox04f rdrbox03f rdrbox06f path!
[snip] mid> -5305 rdrbox04h rdrbox03h path!
[snip] mid> 1376 albany02f rdrbox04f rdrbox03f rdrbox06f path!
[snip] mid> 829 albany02f rdrbox04f rdrbox03f rdrbox06f path!
[snip] mid> 1183 albany02f rdrbox04f rdrbox03f rdrbox06f path!
[snip] mid> 989 albany02f rdrbox04f rdrbox03f rdrbox06f path!
[snip] mid> -9151 rdrbox04h rdrbox03h path!
[snip] mid> 719 albany02f rdrbox04f rdrbox03f rdrbox06f path!
[snip] mid> 839 albany02f rdrbox04f rdrbox03f rdrbox06f path!
[snip] mid> 551 albany02f rdrbox04f rdrbox03f rdrbox06f path!
[snip] mid> 941 albany02f rdrbox04f rdrbox03f rdrbox06f path!
[snip] mid> 828 albany02f rdrbox04f rdrbox03f rdrbox06f path!
[snip] mid> -6353 rdrbox04h rdrbox03h path!
The problem arises because the newsfeeds sees all of these as articles
<16k, and puts them in "small" outgoing queues. Kind of blows out peers
wanting a small article feed.
Other than ugly logs, this would not hurt a reader only box, and it
wasn't happening before I shut down and gave the box new IP addresses.
At that time I cleaned out history from the test runs, and did a makedbz
to start the hash over, since it was only fed previously with test data.
Clues appreciated, this is now a production box, and it's not working
at all well.
