Think I found a bunch of the makehistory problem

Yeah, that really looks like pwrite failing with a nonsensical error
message, which I bet means that we need an xpwrite wrapper to retry until
it finishes writing. Bleh.

Hm, I thought makedbz did that too, but maybe the history API moved things
around?
