Someone else had this problem a while back.  It's caused by getting a
write-only file into the set of read file descriptors in select somehow,
but I don't know how that could happen.  I don't think we ever found the
source of the bug; it seems to happen only very rarely.

If you can figure it out from the above log messages, that would be really
cool.
