ME source lost . Exiting

Hi,
 I've inherited the news service at our university, and am trying to bring up a replacement 
server. The paths are different,but I think I've corrected those. The major difference 
between the old and new servers is that the old machine runs Solaris, while the second 
runs RedHat Linux.
 The service comes up aright, and I can telnet the appropriate ports, then when our 
newsfeed connects it dies with the following message in news.notice

Aug  5 11:20:54 fig innd: SERVER starting
Aug  5 11:46:49 fig innd: server6.netnews.ja.net connected 21 streaming allowed
Aug  5 11:46:49 fig innd: server6.netnews.ja.net:21 NCmode "mode stream" received
Aug  5 11:46:49 fig innfeed[1024]: ME source lost . Exiting
Aug  5 11:46:49 fig innfeed[1024]: ME finishing at Tue Aug  5 11:46:49 2003

The only place I see 'ME' defined is in incoming.conf, and the files
 look ok to me. Am I looking in the right place?
