502 error on connecting

That version is significantly out of date. 2.3.4 is the most recent
stable release.

You need to configure your readers.conf file. There is copious
documentation installed as ~news/man/readers.conf.5 as well as the example
readers.conf provided, examples very similar to your configuration are
there.
