how does history file get too large?

Well dealing with control.* should help quite a bit but you may need to
investigate going to "large file" support inn.  Double check your OS to
make sure it can do it.

If you go this way you will probably need to first build perl with large
file support on and then build inn with large file support.

When I did this I had to start over with new history, overview, and zeroed
out cnfs partitions because some of the pointers in existing data were 32
bit offsets and wouldn't align in the new 64 bit offset code.

Keep in mind that a large history file will slow down incoming article
speed.  The history cache size can help mitigate this.
