No problem and I am glad I can help in anyway.

Okay, my miscctl.log has been clean out but I
went back to all the checkgroups that have come
out over the past 7 days and did a manual
docheckgroups on all of them. This past week
includes: grisbi.*, fr.*, sdnet.*, fido7.*, ka.*,
hr.*, big8, microsoft.public.*

I have not seen any problems or anything unusual
with: grisbi.*, sdnet.*, ka.*, hr.*, big8,
microsoft.public.* but have seen odd things with: fido7.* and fr.*.

In the case of fr.* it is completely is broken.
When I feed fr.* in manually into docheckgroups I get:
grep: Unmatched ) or \)
grep: Unmatched ) or \)
grep: Unmatched ) or \)
grep: Unmatched ) or \)
grep: Unmatched ) or \)
grep: Unmatched ) or \)

In the case of fido7.*:
         /etc/news/bin/ctlinnd newgroup fido7.ru.microchipòÁÚÒÁÂÏÔËÁ y
         /etc/news/bin/ctlinnd newgroup ÐÒÏÇÒÁÍÍÎÏ-ÁÐÐÁÒÁÔÎÙÈ y
         /etc/news/bin/ctlinnd newgroup ÓÒÅÄÓÔ× y
         /etc/news/bin/ctlinnd newgroup ÎÁ y

[a lot of lines like this. Our active file is in
sync with ddt.demos.su (where fido7.* originates)
since we get a feed from ddt.demos.su.]

I don't recall seeing this behavior (at least for fido7.*) in the old inn 2.4.2
