BIND 9 on Red Hat

Haven't seen any traffic here about experiences with BIND 9 on Red Hat,
so I'll start a new thread for the brave. ;-)

I bit the bullet and tried the Rawhide SRPM for bind-9.0.0-2. I
immediately discovered that the RH-provided init script was pretty
broken. It attempts to use "-u named" which requires a 2.3 kernel, and
I was running 2.2. (The script could use uname to find the kernel
version and build the command on the fly, or named could consider the
option to be a warning instead of a failure on the older kernel.) It
also still refers to ndc for various operations, most of which aren't
even implemented yet in BIND 9. A little research revealed that another
hardy adventurer had encountered the same issues:

http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=19956

I then found I had to create an /etc/rndc.conf file and matching key
and control statements in my old named.conf file. Ideally the
installation should create a /etc/named.key to be included by both the
rndc.conf and named.conf files, and should append the required control
statement to any existing named.conf. (Does rndc.conf support an
include directive?) Or perhaps these should be provided as part of the
caching-nameserver config file package.

After these two gotchas I decided to roll back to 8.2.2-P5 and wait to
see what develops in a 9.0.1 RPM package.
