My name servers are having trouble getting the mx records for the mic.com.tw
domain.
If I
Dig mic.com.tw mx
Against our name server that handle all external DNS queries I get
$ /usr/sbin/dig mic.com.tw mx
; <<>> DiG 8.3 <<>> mic.com.tw mx
;; res options: init recurs defnam dnsrch
;; got answer:
;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: SERVFAIL, id: 4
;; flags: qr rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 0, AUTHORITY: 0, ADDITIONAL: 0
;; QUERY SECTION:
;; mic.com.tw, type = MX, class = IN
;; Total query time: 23 msec
;; FROM: rootdns1 to SERVER: default -- 192.19.192.98
;; WHEN: Wed Feb 27 16:09:41 2002
;; MSG SIZE sent: 28 rcvd: 28
If I query their DNS servers I get
$ /usr/sbin/dig mic.com.tw mx @203.66.161.1 +norec
; <<>> DiG 8.3 <<>> mic.com.tw mx @203.66.161.1 +norec
; (1 server found)
;; res options: init defnam dnsrch
;; got answer:
;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 58710
;; flags: qr ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 2, AUTHORITY: 0, ADDITIONAL: 2
;; QUERY SECTION:
;; mic.com.tw, type = MX, class = IN
;; ANSWER SECTION:

Now the name server listed for mic.com.tw never set the aa flag, so they are
considered lame.
Not all the time but some of the times if I go back to our DNS servers right
after doing a +norec against their DNS server, our DNS server will then
return a answer
$ /usr/sbin/dig mic.com.tw mx
; <<>> DiG 8.3 <<>> mic.com.tw mx
;; res options: init recurs defnam dnsrch
;; got answer:
;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 4

Everything works ok till our cache expires. Why? Looking for some ideas?
Consequently we have email that consistently queues in our mail queues.
If I setup a zone type forward for mic.com.tw., pointing to there listed DNS
server mail never queues and everything appears good.
