http://www.domain.com vs. http://domain.com

Dear readers,

I am not a crack at configuring dns servers, but I know it's a
necessary technology. I noticed that some web sites require you to
type www in the address bar while other sites are accessible both
ways.

Can someone explain to me how that can be.
